First Week of May: Guided Edges, K390, and the Joy of Precision
Some weeks in the shop take on a quiet experimental energy, the kind driven by respect for the particular kind of care that a tool deserves. Certain steels ask for a specific approach, and when they do, we listen.
This week, Steel Revival's EDC aficionado pulled down a WorkSharp guided system for a Spyderco Stretch 2 XL in K390. What followed was a clean, controlled progression that ended in a razor of an edge, the kind that glides through a cardboard roll with that quiet confidence we all recognize.
We grabbed a few screenshots from the cut test to share, because the edge tells its own story.
The Setup: The cardboard roll standing upright, the knife poised.
The Bite: The blade entering cleanly, showing a true apex.
The Follow-Through: A demonstration of a well-sharpened K390 edge.
Guided systems aren’t training wheels; they’re precision tools. Used well, they produce edges that rival, and sometimes surpass, freehand work.
Our Take: Precision as a Form of Care
"A Spyderco in K390 is a perfect match for a guided system test: hard enough to challenge the sharpener, honest enough to reveal the truth, and rewarding when you get it right. Precision isn’t always about mastery; sometimes it’s about humility, about admitting that a little help, a little structure, and a little guidance can make the work better. A reminder that even the most capable hands benefit from a steady guide now and then."
